High School Athletics
Central High School, home to the Bobcats and Lady Cats, offers a wide array of sports programs. The school’s facilities include the Didrikson Gymnasium, a gymnastics facility, a natatorium, and tennis courts, providing student-athletes with top-notch venues for training and competition. The Bobcat Booster Club plays a pivotal role in supporting these programs, raising funds to assist coaches in acquiring equipment and resources beyond the athletics department’s budget.
Angelo State University Athletics
Angelo State University (ASU) is a hub for collegiate sports, with the Rams and Rambelles competing in NCAA Division II as members of the Lone Star Conference. ASU offers 13 intercollegiate varsity sports, including baseball, basketball, cross country, football, track and field, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. The university’s commitment to athletics is evident in its facilities, such as LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field and the Junell Center-Stephens Arena.
In addition to varsity sports, ASU provides opportunities for student engagement through intramural and club sports. The intramural program features over 20 team and individual sports, with more than 2,000 students participating annually. Notably, ASU’s co-ed intramural flag football team has secured six national titles. Club sports at ASU include rodeo, handball, shotgun sports, bass fishing, rugby, soccer, volleyball, powerlifting, tennis, and ultimate frisbee, offering students diverse avenues to stay active and compete.
Community Sports Programs
The San Angelo Home School Sports Association (SAHSSA) provides home-schooled children with opportunities to participate in organized sports. As a Christ-centered nonprofit organization, SAHSSA emphasizes good sportsmanship, honesty, commitment, and courage through supervised sports programs. Competing against area public and private schools, as well as other home school organizations, SAHSSA aims to offer every child a place to find success through athletic participation.
